Substantial Web Outage Affects Dozens Online Platforms and Apps

An extensive web failure has affected dozens sites and mobile apps around the world, with users reporting problems connecting to the web after problems at the web hosting service.

The disrupted apps comprise the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with a host of Amazon-operated operations like its primary shopping site and the Ring home security firm.

Throughout Britain, the financial institution Lloyds was affected as well as its affiliates Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of issues reaching the HM Revenue and Customs site on Monday morning. Additionally in Britain, many Ring customers used online platforms to state their doorbells were malfunctioning.

In the UK alone, accounts of issues on specific apps totaled the many thousands for every service.

Amazon reported that the problem originated in the eastern region of the US at the cloud division, a division that offers essential online infrastructure for numerous businesses, who lease space on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global web hosting service.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the US (8am BST), Amazon confirmed “elevated failure rates and latencies” for AWS services in a area on the east coast of the US. The cascading impact was seen to affect platforms around the world, and the Downdetector site reporting problems with the same sites in multiple continents.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that monitors online failures, further indicated a rise in problems on the start of the week, including several cases found in the state of Virginia, the location of the AWS US-East-1 zone where officials confirmed the outage started.
